Healing Gardens

by | Jun 4, 2017

The idea of a healing garden is certainly not a new concept. For centuries, healing gardens have been recognized as a place of recovery and recuperation across the world. Stemming from various types of Monastic Cloister gardens and Japanese Zen Gardens, the serenity a healing garden radiates is surreal.

Healing gardens can often be found in healthcare facilities, including general acute care hospitals, outpatient clinics, assisted living and skilled nursing facilities, mental and behavioral health facilities, hospices, and specialty facilities such as rehabilitation, pediatric, and cancer hospitals and clinics. Patients are not the only ones who benefit from these gardens. Gardens are a great place for visitors and staff to relax and rejuvenate.

Nature is an important part in the healing process. Beautiful trees, grass, flowers, and bushes all serve to promote health by helping to reduce stress, depression, pain, and fatigue. It also is seen to improve immune function, bone strength, wound healing, cognition, concentration, emotional resilience, empathy, energy, relaxation, and overall mood. Nature provides a positive distraction from everything else going on in life.
